To track your brand in Google AI Overviews, check a stable set of buyer questions and record whether an overview appears, how it describes your brand and which pages it links to. Use Search Console's Generative AI performance report alongside those observations. Keep brand mentions, linked-page impressions, website visits and leads as separate measures.
Summary
An AI Overviews monitoring workflow should answer a practical question: when someone researches a need your product serves, what can they learn about your brand? Start with the relevant search questions and preserve the answer evidence. A page appearing as a source, a brand being named and a product being recommended are different observations.
Google now provides a Generative AI performance report in Search Console. It measures impressions from supported AI features, including AI Overviews and AI Mode. Use it to follow exposure of your linked pages, then use repeatable checks to inspect the wording and competitors around a particular question. For a small team or agency, the useful result is a clear information gap to investigate and a baseline to revisit after an improvement.
Start With the Buying Question
Choose questions where a recommendation could matter to your business. A repair shop looking for appointment software may care about reminders, workshop scheduling or a particular integration. Those constraints give you something concrete to inspect in an answer. Keep category questions separate from questions naming your brand, since they test different parts of the buyer's research.
Record the market, language, device and date alongside each check. Keep the question wording stable when comparing periods. If the result has no AI Overview, record that outcome separately. If collection failed, mark it unavailable. Neither case should silently become an answer in which your brand was absent.
Keep the Google surface explicit. A response from the Gemini app is not an AI Overview on a Google results page. Likewise, an AI Mode conversation and a conventional search result can produce different observations. Combining them under a single label makes it harder to decide what actually changed.
What to Collect
Use this checklist when an AI Overview is available:
- The question and the conditions of the check.
- The answer text or a saved capture that can be reviewed later.
- Whether the brand is named and how it is described.
- Whether the answer recommends the product for the stated need.
- The competitors discussed and the relevant wording around them.
- The linked pages, with link placement recorded when you can inspect it.
Suppose an answer links to your educational guide but recommends another company's software. That is a useful source appearance, while the recommendation went elsewhere. This is a teaching example. Recording those facts separately tells a team much more than a single positive visibility label would.
For a rendered result, distinguish links within the answer text from links shown in source panels. A list of returned URLs alone cannot reconstruct that placement. The guide to links inside AI Overviews explains how to inspect it without counting a link as a visit.
Use Search Console's AI Report
Open the Generative AI performance report for Search and compare complete date ranges in Pacific Time. It covers AI Overviews and AI Mode together.
The report counts linked-page impressions, with page, country, date and device dimensions. It does not supply answer text or a count of unlinked brand mentions. Use standard Web performance for clicks, keeping its broader scope clear.
Generative AI impressions are included in Web data; adding them would double-count exposure. Page and property totals can differ because their aggregation differs. Keep filters and aggregation consistent between periods, and flag preliminary dates or unavailable reporting. Save the view you reviewed so a colleague can repeat the comparison.
Inspect the Page Behind the Link
Open a cited page and read the section relevant to the buying question. Look for a specific fact, comparison or instruction that helps the reader decide. If your own page is linked, check whether it delivers on that need and makes the next action clear. A broad article can earn exposure while leaving a buyer unable to evaluate the product.
Google's current guidance for generative AI search emphasizes useful content and sound technical foundations. Eligibility includes being indexed, eligible for a search snippet and included in Search generative AI features. Review access and eligibility before interpreting an absent page as a content-quality verdict. Meeting the requirements does not establish that a page will appear for your chosen question.
Choose a revision you can explain in terms of a reader's need: clarify a supported integration, document a limitation, add a substantiated comparison or answer a missing setup question. Keep the change on the page that serves that purpose. Creating another page for every wording variation makes the site harder to maintain and gives you a less clear experiment to follow.
Review Visibility and Outcomes Together
After a substantive edit, record its date and compare later checks of the same questions. Look for repeated changes in descriptions, recommendations and linked pages. Review Search Console page impressions alongside that evidence. If exposure changes, inspect the query and page context before attributing the movement to your revision.
Use website analytics to review organic landing sessions and useful actions, such as a completed enquiry or account creation. Ordinary referral data may not identify which Google visit came specifically from an AI Overview. Keep that attribution limit visible. An increase in AI-feature impressions can be a useful observation even when its contribution to leads remains unknown.
The weekly review should end with a decision you can act on: keep watching the current question set, correct an inaccurate fact, improve a page that leaves a buyer question unanswered, or investigate a recurring competitor recommendation. Preserve the answer and linked page that motivated the decision so the next review starts with evidence.
Using PromptScout
PromptScout's scheduled monitoring brings selected buyer questions, observed AI Overviews answers, competitor mentions and returned sources into a repeatable review. Use Monitoring to read the answer and Sources to inspect the linked pages. Keep Search Console alongside it for Google's own page-impression reporting.
The benefit for a small team is a history you can return to when a recommendation changes. You can spend the review deciding which buyer question needs a better answer on your site. Check your brand's AI visibility, review the suggested questions and build your baseline. Scheduled collection follows your plan's cadence.
Notes on the Data
Our monitoring records from August 25 through September 23, 2026 UTC contained 535 successful Google AI Overviews answers across 82 tracked questions. Source URLs were present in 463 records. These anonymized counts describe the collected answer set, not all Google searches or the rate at which Google displays an overview. Returned URLs do not establish rendered link placement, a recommendation or a website visit. The repair-shop example illustrates the workflow and is not a customer finding.
